What is The Social Brew Collective?
The Social Brew Collective is a project to support and raise awareness of some of the UK’s most exciting and innovative craft breweries – those who, through brewing and social enterprise, promote inclusivity and opportunity within their communities.
The project is coordinated by Wild Beer Co’s Lead Brewer Russ, who can be contacted by email on: email@example.com
Keg Series 2019
In 2019 we co-ordinated a series of collaborations pairing social enterprise breweries Ignition, Spotlight and Tap Social with Gipsy Hill, Wild Card and ourselves. Our series of three eclectic tasting beers was launched in December at Kerb in Covent Garden.
Our collaboration with Tap Social took place over twelve months, and established a barrel ageing and blending programme at their brewpub in Oxford.
The Social Enterprises Involved
Currently, there are three social enterprises involved in The Social Brew Collective.
Ignition are a vibrant, South London brewery which trains and employs people with learning disabilities to brew great beer. They are a not-for-profit company, paying the London Living Wage to their trainee brewers.
Spotlight have three goals when it comes to their brewery. These are to brew great beer, to provide a supportive and tailored working environment for people with Learning Disabilities and to raise awareness and educate about the challenges people living with different Learning Disabilities face.
Founded in 2016, Tap Social Movement grew out of a passion for good beer and social justice. They are a craft brewery which provides training courses for people serving prison sentences, offering courses in brewing and business start-up, and providing one-on-one support in securing permanent employment to assist in effective rehabilitation.
This campaign aims to raise awareness of the incredible work done by these social enterprises within the brewing industry, promoting great people, great breweries, & great beers!
To do this we will:
- Share our brewing experience and knowledge and offer advice and support to social enterprise breweries.
- Use our position and contacts within the craft beer sector, to promote the inclusion of social enterprise breweries within the sector's shared activities.
- Utilise our market reach to raise public awareness of social enterprise breweries.
- Use our time and contacts to co-ordinate joint events under the banner of 'The Social Brew Collective'.
- Share our experience and enthusiasm with others and encourage them to join in on this journey.
2019 Launch Event
The Social Brew Collective beer launch was hosted at Kerb in Covent Garden and provided a brilliant opportunity to talk to the brewers and learn more about the breweries and the beers produced.
All of the collaborations were also poured at each of the breweries' taprooms on the day, including our own Barrel-Aged Sour that we brewed in collaboration with Tap Social.
Listen to the Radio 4 Food Program podcast 'Pints Of Progress' to hear more from Ignition and Spotlight about their work and collaborations.
Initial 2018 Collaboration With Ignition Brewery
As part of the Cellarman Project in 2018, we created Summer Riot in collaboration with Ignition Brewery from Lewisham.
Ignition employs and trains people with learning disabilities to brew and serve great beer. This beer was the beginning of what was to become The Social Brew Collective.
